My 2 friends and I are setting up a business that runs local baby fairs - with nearly new sales, family focussed businesses, free talks from midwives, doulas etc and are very confused about oublic liability insurance. We have been advised that every person who has a stall at our event must have their own public liability insurance and this includes members of the public not just businesses - we cannot see how that can be right and dont think that other set ups enforce that - please please please can someone help? We thought that our public liability and that of the venue would cover everything - but we were even told that when a hall gets hired for a birthday party you have to get public liability insurance - and I definitely have never done that for my daughters parties or have I been told to - HELP HELP HELP  - thanks a million.  Tracy

Hi Tracy Public liability insurance for events is not a legal requirement so it is down to the individual or business to weigh up the risks and consider whether they need to obtain cover. Some venues may insist on the organiser and even exhibitors having public liability insurance, but that is a commercial discussion as opposed to the law. It is worth checking what your public liability insurance includes so that you know where you stand when talking to venues. Hope this helps. Suzanne Lawyers4mumpreneurs
