I fell into marketing pretty much by accident. My degree was in English Literature and my expertise was in IT. It was when I started my first job at an American multinational I found myself adopting different hats. Some days I was doing PA duties for the CEO, next day I would be delivering training and induction to new starts, day after that working on marketing and PR campaigns. I worked for this company for several years and continued to build up my experience in training, marketing and PR but still kept my IT skills up to date. After the company closed down its UK operation I continued on my eclectic path, working in several areas from marketing to logistics to legal requirements training. It was in the last couple of years I found my expertise areas merging. With social media coming to the forefront and the development of the Web 2.0 I was suddenly using my advanced IT skills and web knowledge with marketing campaigns. I took a break from work five years ago after the birth of my lovely son. I was thrust into maternity leave when he arrived 16 weeks early and for the next year he became my sole focus of attention. I swapped power suits for flour covered aprons, board meetings for picnics in the park and discussions of ROI, demographics and sales pushed aside for giggles, squeals and an unholy love for the most recognisable marketing icon in the world, Mickey Mouse.
When I went back to work I realised my priorities had shifted. I still loved my work, meeting new people, working with new customers but I missed my son, felt the guilt that every mother knows as you lift your child at that unholy hour of the morning and sending him off to the baby sitter/grandmother/nursery. This came to a head about a year ago when during a gloriously hot summer I saw my son miss out on playing in the park, riding his bike and having fun with friends as I took him away each day to spend time with someone else. I weighed up my options and started working from home, doing freelance IT, analytics, marketing and PR. It was when one company asked me to work with them on their social media presence that my brain wave hit and I realised that my blend of IT/Marketing/Social media skills could be utilised and Social Climbers Ltd was born.
We work with SME training them and developing their social media skills. We set up their profiles, maintain them, show them how to develop them. We also work on marketing campaigns with them that maximise the use of their social media profiles and update them on their engagement, influence and sales levels and provide consistent support. As well as working with start up companies developing their marketing and PR, helping them create and develop a brand and assist them on how to work smarter through IT. We also run training workshops and deliver 1:1 training on marketing, social media and IT. |
