Business Mentoring Guidelines | Mums in Business

Mentors will:

  • Ask the mentee what they expect of them
  • Will question and challenge but not give advice or dictate what a client would do
  • Offer expertise, ways of finding out
  • Support and encourage
  • Share their own experiences
  • Use subtle guidance but ensures the mentee makes all the decisions
  • Be interested in the mentee and seeing them succeed
  • Not use judgement, stays neutral and does not blame
  • Admit when they don't know and offer suggestions for where or who to ask
  • Gives constructive and positive feedback
  • Not do most of the talking
  • Turn up, prepared, to sessions on time
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Share their widsdom, whether you want it or not!

Mentees will:

  • Determine what they want to achieve from the session before it starts
  • Be open and honest
  • Take responsibility for all decisions made as a result of the session
  • Understand that a mentor is not an expert in every area of business and cannot be expected to be
