What Causes Stress at Work?   February 26th, 2013

Two pieces of research combined have helped to give an idea of stress levels – and their causes – among UK office workers.

The first piece of research was a survey of 2,000 office workers across the UK asking how stressed they were and what were the causes.

The second piece of research involved a 200-strong secret army of stress volunteers who took part in a ‘stress thermometer’ test. It measured their body temperature – which is a tried and tested way of gauging a level of stress within people – and were asked about their stress levels via a questionnaire, all throughout a five day period.

The research was conducted by small business supplies company Viking, and the results are illustrated below:

I am surprised that the figures are as low as they are! It would be interesting to have a similar study taken by self employed individuals. I fear that the reasons raised above are due to the work culture in the uk. Something that will be very hard to change.

According to this survey only 20% of people feel stress as their job offers no work life balance but in my opinion 70% of people are in stress just because there is no balance in their life and their job. If we have a job according to our love and have a our lovely person then we can easily make a adjustment between life and work and can live happy. Check this out here:

That’s a great article you have pointed us to Jerry. I agree with you that if you are doing a job that you love, then extra hours do not feel like overwork. I feel very lucky to have found the balance that works for me – it is not at all what I thought I was looking for when I started out, but there it is….

Stress at jobs are mainly because of no work-life balance and a horrible boss;) The former is in our hands to manage but the latter takes ‘good fortune’. Thanks for the great share.
